Reno Rally Review 12.5.06

Prior to the 2006 Reno Rally the Universal Rally Team was first in Group 5 points and second overall in the Southwest Cup Rally Series…. and that’s how it stayed.

The Reno rally was cut short due to long delays and safety issues (hunters making it onto the closed roads in their cars). After it was all said and done the team only ran 1 stage totaling 14 miles compared to the 115 originally scheduled miles.

The team worked on the car right up until the start of the rally (including wiring the new lights during the start delay). “We actually weren’t that disappointed with our performance on the one and only stage.  We set the fastest 2wd time and were 4th fastest overall with two STI’s and an EVO in front of us.” Says Team Driver Andrew Sutherland.  Not bad considering the car was gutted less than two weeks before the start of the rally, and Andrew hasn’t seen the driver’s seat since he was upside down in a Missouri tree.

Using that one stage to score the event, the team ended up first in Group 5 and forth overall for the rally.  More importantly, the result was the Southwest Cup Rally Series Group 5 win and second overall for the entire two year series. “We wouldn’t have made the start if it wasn’t for the help of my friends and family. Most importantly, the support and help of Fred Su, the owner of Evolution Racewerks. Thanks Fred!”
